Big Boy Shoes
(Kessler)

Jesus rebuked His disciples for getting on to the people who were bringing their children to Him for prayer and stated, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of heaven.” There is so much we can learn from children; from everything about how we should live life, to our relationship with our heavenly Father. But what about handicapped children that might be unable to communicate clearly, unable to fend for themselves, and misunderstood by most? What can we learn from them? Plenty!…as expressed in this song by Marvin regarding his handicapped son. Even though the cards have been stacked against him since birth, little Spencer continues to press on with fortitude and determination. How often do we become discouraged and want to quit pressing on in our natural and/or spiritual life, over things that often times really mean little in the grand scheme of life? May all of us learn from Spencer to approach our heavenly father the same way he approaches his earthly father; loving Him with all of our heart, soul, and mind, and trusting Him to meet our every need.

Matthew 19:14, Matthew 18:1-5, 10, Romans 8:16-17

Sometimes my heart breaks, when I know my little boy is about to fall
I know Jesus’ heart breaks too.
Unbalanced motions, he scoots along in those little shoes
He falls over and over again.

But he never gives in, he knows his daddy is there to catch him if he falls
Never quite understanding why
With innocent eyes, he looks up and asks me with a smile
“Is Spencer a big boy today?”

Soon the days turn into years…and the years go drifting by
And my little boy’s hope never fades away…he remains determined to try.

Jesus I can’t pretend to know...to have all the reasons why
But this much I know is true…with every sparrow that falls from the sky
I know you see my little boy too.
“As you walk along Daddy in those big boy shoes”
My little boy’s eyes seem to say…..
“Daddy hold on to Jesus just like I do…and we’ll walk like He walks..someday.

Sometimes when I get discouraged I remember my little boy’s eyes telling me
“He knows what we’re going through”
“All the sparrows that fall from the sky”
“Daddy, He sees when we fall too”
“Daddy you’ve been given those big boy shoes, to help me along the way”
“Daddy, hold on to Jesus just like I do”
“We’ll walk beside His big shoes someday!”
